Shell Candle Experience

Shell Candle Experience

A special shell-shaped candle inspired by the beautiful sea around Miyakojima. Keep a memory of the islands in a form you can hold.

The Shell Candle is made in a special shell-shaped mold. You choose the colors, and optionally add gold leaf or glitter. Because it is simple, your color choices become the character of the piece, and gold leaf or glitter catches the light along the ridges of the shell for a much more radiant finish. At JPY 3,000 it is the most affordable of the four menus at iepoyo candle, and an easy place to start if this is your first time making a candle.

Shell Candle Experience: Step by Step (About 90 min in total)

  1. Choose colors and optionsAbout 15 min

The look of a Shell Candle comes almost entirely from its colors. Pick to suit the mood you want: blues like the Miyakojima sea, a pale beige like the sand, or a bold accent color. This is also when you decide whether to add gold leaf & glitter (JPY 500). If you are unsure, our staff will suggest combinations.

  2. Place gold leaf & glitter in the moldAbout 15 min

This is the very first step of making. If you chose the option, the gold leaf and glitter go into the mold before the wax is poured. Placing them first lets light settle into the ridges of the shell, giving the finished candle a radiant, three-dimensional look.

  3. Color the wax and pour it into the moldAbout 40 min

The heart of the experience. Add your chosen color to the melted wax little by little to adjust its depth, then pour it into the shell mold. Even with the same color, the strength of the tint changes the look of the finished piece.

  4. Remove from the mold and finishAbout 20 min

Once set, the candle comes out of the mold and the edges and surface are tidied into the shell shape. Adjust the wick position and it is done.

What Makes the Shell Candle Special

Shell Candle Experience FAQ

Q. Does the Shell Candle use real shells?
A. No. This menu does not embed real shells, coral or sand. The candle is made in a shell-shaped mold, so the candle itself takes the shape of a shell. What you choose are the colors and the optional gold leaf & glitter.
Q. Should I add gold leaf or glitter?
A. It is up to you, but it is an option we especially recommend for the Shell Candle (gold leaf & glitter set, JPY 500). Light settles into the ridges of the shell and adds depth, so even a simple color scheme ends up looking radiant. You can decide on the day.
Q. From what age can children make a Shell Candle?
A. Children aged 6 and up can take part. Children under 6 are welcome too when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children of junior high school age and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Since the process centers on choosing colors and pouring into the mold, it is an easy menu for children.
