A row of handmade Shisa in different colors and expressions, made in the Shisa-making experience in Miyakojima
ABOUT

Make a Shisa in Miyakojima, a guardian that is yours alone

The Shisa you see on rooftops and at doorways is Okinawa's guardian lion-dog, protecting families from harm. In the iepoyo shisa experience, you make that guardian with your own hands, in soft pastel colors.

How Shisa Making Works

There are no difficult steps. Our staff are right beside you, so take it at your own pace.

  1. Shape the face in progress
    01Clay

    Shape the face

We prepare the molded lower body. You shape the face from clay. The mane and the expression are entirely up to you.

  2. Paint the colors in progress
    02Paint

    Paint the colors

Paint it freely. Blues like the Miyako sea and soft pastel colors both suit it beautifully.

  3. Bake in the oven in progress
    03About 15 min

    Bake in the oven

It bakes in the oven for about 15 minutes. While it bakes, you are free to relax in the shop or head out.

  4. All done in progress
    04Take home

    All done

Once baked, your one-of-a-kind guardian is finished and ready to take home the same day.

They all start from the same mold, yet every face turns out different.Yours will be the only one in the world.
